Inspiration:
As we traveled through the desert in the south of Israel, our bus stopped near what looked like an outcropping of dried up bushes. We got off the bus – in the middle of nowhere – and our guide led us to a set of stairs carved into the sandy rock behind the bushes. We walked down those stairs into a cistern. Carved out of the rock and desert sand, a cistern would have filled with water after the flooding rains.
The cistern would have been a gathering place for all, providing water year round.
The place to be… and be seen.
Details:
This window measures 16″ x 16″ including a half inch wide zinc frame. Created in the copper foil method of stained glass construction, the solder lines are left in their natural silvery tone and polished to a shine.
The two women represented in the window sport beaded necklaces. Three additional three-dimensional women are hand knit of a copper core wire with nylon coating. The various colors are embedded in that nylon coating.
*From Darkness to Light*
In the fall of 2017, my husband Marty and I joined a group of congregants from Congregation Beth Or in Maple Glen PA on a fascinating 2 week pilgrimage to Poland and Israel. The trip was designed to trace our roots and gain a deeper understanding for our history as Jews.
This collection of stained glass windows was inspired by that pilgrimage, both the deeply depressing images of concentration camps and uplifting images pointing us to a bright future. We begin with the darkness... and moved towards the light
